How the engagement works
The model is the method. Modeling is the work — not a discovery phase you get through before the real build begins.
Two modes
Formalize what works
Some things in the business already work but were never defined precisely. I make the working concept explicit so it can be trusted, measured, and built on without each team re-deriving it.
Replace what is broken
Sometimes the concept itself is wrong — the thing being measured no longer maps to the outcome. Here the work is conceptual invention: a corrected model, then the build on top of it.
The phases
Modeling
Build the working model of the system — what the moving parts are, how they relate, and where the real outcome is decided.
Checkpoint
Before expensive hours, the build is confirmed or re-baselined against the model. This is where “don’t build that” can be the honest, and most valuable, answer.
Build
Build on the corrected foundation — a data product, an automation, or a process change.
One model, two audiences
System map
For the business: a plain-language map of how the system actually produces the outcome.
Technical Domain Model
For the build: the same model, made precise enough to implement against.
